How Often Should I Change My Oil?
In the Automotive-care world, the one thing you can pro-actively monitor to extend the life of your automobile is to change the oil at regular serviceintervals. Oil is the life-blood of your vehicle, and the importance of timely oil changes mean the difference between a well-oiled machine and liquid sandpaper eating away at the inside mechanics of your engine.

Most modern auto companies recommend the usage of synthetic oils over conventional oils. The reason for this is that the science behind synthetic oils requires less frequent change and can withstand greater temperatures and demands. The problem that you run into, however, when dealing with dealer-reccommended synthetic oil changes at every 7,500, 15,000, or even 20,000 miles is the rapidly reducing quality of your oil and filter.

Your oil filter helps screen out debris that collects inside your oil before it passes through the
various channels that help lubricate your engine. An 7,500 mile-old oil filter fails to remove debris
that a brand new oil filter can with ease, and slowly—over time—your oil becomes a slurry of dirt
and grime that becomes rapidly destructive to your engine. Friction is the thief of your
engine's performance.

The other important reason to think about oil-change regularity is more of a preventative issue in terms of vehicle care. When most drivers come in for their 3,000 mile oil change, it's really actually closer to 4,000 or 5,000 miles. Imagine how far off you could be if you thought of your oil changes in terms of 20,000 mile intervals. Also, the great benefit of thinking in 3,000 mile intervals is that it provides you with an easy opportunity to get your vehicle checked up on. A lot can happen in 3,000 miles, and it's far cheaper to inspect and address swollen water hoses, radiator leaks, or even tires that are showing steel at this point than what could potentially happen 7,500 miles from now.

Your safest and most effective way of maintaining your vehicle is to try and think about your oil changes at every 3,000-4,000 miles. At around 3-4 changes a year is around the same cost of a towing bill if something seriously goes wrong, and most likely cheaper than the repair bill will be if you do need to be towed in.
